Seeing Henry Jenkins talk about spreadable media

Lately I’ve been escaping Manchester to come down to London for talks and I’m kind of cursing my days when all the interesting stuff happens down there but frankly I’ve been learning a lot, seeing a lot, and even the sheer difference of pace in life is interesting and worthwhile (even if I sometimes moan about the travel and hours and waking up at 4 AM like yesterday).

After Google Firestarters with Cory Doctorow there was Henry Jenkins last night. It’s a European tour in 11 countries and some 23 cities or so and I’m sure it’ll be around the internet, but for me it was interesting because his work and (Faris’ idea of transmedia planning) largely inspired my dissertation. He’s no longer at MIT’s Convergene Culture Consortium and the talk goes in so many directions it’s hard to just write one blog post about all the stuff it had me thinking about. So I did three, because this is my blog and I’ll cry if I want to or something like that.

1revisiting my dissertation as I wonder why people suddenly became interested in it

2spreadable media, Netflix and indie content producers and some stuff about Amazon & YouTube in the race for original content

3 - the eternal question of ‘Who sees your Facebook posts’ and why you might be paying people to highlight things in their news feed.
